I promised myself I would NOT let the Wildflower Season get away from me this year and it was nearing the end of March so I knew I didn’t have much time left! So, I made an entire week of Wildflower viewing!

Apache Trail Wildflower Drive
Today Joe and I drove the Apache Trail to catch the amazing Wildflowers! I haven’t had the chance to do this drive in years! It’s a 40-mile scenic drive in Apache Junction with roads that wind through the Superstition Mountains offering awesome views of the desert landscape… All in full bloom with poppies, lupines and desert marigolds!
The trail was built in 1872 by miners who were looking for gold. It’s has been a major route through the Sonoran Desert since the Apache Indians used it to travel between their settlements in the Salt River Valley and the San Carlos Apache Reservation in the late 1800s. The trail has been used by miners, ranchers, and other travelers ever since.
We drove through the Goldfield Ghost Town. Saw a beautiful overview of Canyon Lake and stopped in Tortilla Flat for Lunch at a quaint little restaurant with EVERY SQUARE INCH of the walls plastered in ‘signed’ dollar bills! The food was great!

A quick hike of Reach 11 today! Short, easy and wanted to see what kind of Wildflowers they had! It was REALLY pretty!

Today Donna and I went to Spur Cross Recreation Area just North of Cave Creek. I’d never had a chance to hike there before so thought we’d try it out.
Well… for starters there were ZERO Wildflowers! And it was also pretty ‘hilly’, so we didn’t hike far, but Pepper had a good time!
Also, a first for one of my hikes… we passed a wedding party going out to have a ceremony on the trail! So fun!
