The Sonoran Desert Museum is a fusion of zoo, botanical garden, art gllery, natural history museum, and aquarium! The gardens showcase the Sonoran Desert’s ecosystem, home to over 2,000 species of plants and is known as the most lush desert on earth. It is also listed as #5 in the Top Ten U.S. Public Gardens.
Donna had never been to the Desert Museum before and I hadn’t been for years, so decided to do a day trip down! The drive in was amazing!
We walked by (or through) Cat Canyon (bobcats, a Grey Fox and an ocelot in natural settings), the Riparian Corridor (River Otters, Beavers, Bighorn Sheep), Life Underground (rigntail, Gila Monster, and other burrowing species), the Hummingbird Aviary, Birds of the Sonoran Desert in a large free-flight Aviary, Life on the Rocks (A multi-species exhibit featuring species most often seen on Tucson’s rocky slopes (striped skunks, a jackrabbit, frogs, snakes and lizards), Mountain Woodland (Mountain Lion, mule deer, Mexican Grey Wolves, and a Black Bear), Desert Grassland (a walk through towering soap tree yuccas, a variety of desert grasses interspersed with desert shrubs and succuents) and the Desert Loop Trail (Javelinas, Coyotes, and Lizards in natural settings).
The Warden Aquarium houses two galleries, representing both fresh and salt water species.
